About the City of Galt
The history of Cambridge begins with the City of Galt. Galt was established on land granted to the Iroquois people by the British Crown after the American Revolutionary War. In the late 1700s, developers started buying land along the Grand River from the Six Nations led by Joseph Brant. William Dickson, a wealthy immigrant from Scotland, purchased 90,000 acres of land along the Grand River in 1816. This land later became Galt and the Dumfries Townships. Galt attracted industry by 1840 and became the largest town in the Grand River area until the early 1900s. It was known as the “Manchester of Canada” due to its extensive industry powered by the Grand River.
About the Town of Preston
The Town of Preston was formed on land belonging to the German Company Tract along the Speed River. German-speaking Mennonites from Pennsylvania arrived in the area in the 1800s and purchased land. John Erb, a Mennonite from Lancaster County, bought a significant portion of land that later became Preston. The settlement grew slowly but saw industrial growth by 1879 with industries such as foundries, carriage manufacturers, potteries, and furniture companies.
About the Town of Hespeler
The Town of Hespeler was also established on land purchased by Mennonites from Pennsylvania along the Speed River. Jacob Hespeler arrived in 1845 and built an industrial complex that laid the foundation for Hespeler’s future industrialization, primarily in woollen and textile mills. The settlement grew slowly and was incorporated as a town in January 1901.
About the Village of Blair
The Village of Blair was settled by Mennonites from Pennsylvania and purchased land from the Six Nations through land speculator Richard Beasley. The village had various names, including Carlisle, Durham, and Lambs’ Bridge, before being named Blair. It had significant industries such as flour mills and a hydroelectric system.
